In November, the spotlight is on men’s mental health–and mustaches!
Unfortunately, all around the world, men are suffering in silence while dealing with the burden of poor mental health. This is a very serious problem that deserves attention, but bringing attention to this issue doesn’t always have to be about pamphlets and statistics. Movember is a movement that is supporting men’s health and mental health one step, mustache, and event at a time. Let’s take a closer look.
What is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month? 💙
In November, Men’s Health Month and Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month get their time to shine. During this month, we take time to acknowledge, process, and focus on the reality that men all around the world are suffering with their mental health–primarily in silence.
When asked, 77% of men¹ reported having suffered from known mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and elevated stress levels. Despite this shockingly high percentage, only an estimated 40% of men¹ actually talk to someone about what they are going through. SHOCKING! 😱 It is believed that this leads to a disproportionate amount of male suicides, with nearly 4 men committing suicide for every 1 woman². 😱 Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month is focused on highlighting this reality and encouraging men to get the support they need.
What is Movember? 👨🏻
The Movember meaning can often be lost in images of mustaches at first glance–but don’t worry. Fortunately, a mustache is the new beard!

During the month of November, we focus on bringing awareness to men’s mental health. At the center of these efforts is Movember³, a movement that is committed to supporting men’s health through awareness, fundraising, and the Movember Mustache. This movement began with men jokingly bringing back the outdated classic mustache. A short while later, it became the symbol of supporting men’s physical and mental health.
Every November, Movember encourages people to spread awareness about primary men’s health risks, like poor mental health. How do they do this? Well, Mo Bros have three options–grow a Mo (mustache), host an event, or run or walk 60 miles in November to signify the 60 men that we lose to suicide every hour all around the world (!). This fun and quirky movement is tackling some very serious issues with a hairy smile.
What is Movember for Women? 🧔♀️
Women all around the world have relatives, friends, and significant others that are all male–so, naturally, women want to show their support too. This is why Movember also includes the help of Mo Sistas⁴ – women who participate in Movember. These women commit to moving, raising awareness, and holding events to show their support.
Though not every woman grows a Mo for Movember, no one is going to tell you that you can’t. Mustache November allows mustaches of all shapes and sizes, even if you can really only get a few barely visible hairs on your upper lip.
